IIUM.FM Rejoices Over Ummatic Week 2011

Assalamualaikum listeners!

We would like to apologise for the blog's lack of updates; there are slight changes happening within  IIUM.FM (we'll let you know all about it real soon!), but insyallah, there are good changes coming up for our one and only campus radio!

Anyway, one week has past since the closing of the successful event of the year in IIUM, which is none other than the Ummatic Week 2011! With its theme "One Ummah", the glorious one-week event was held to expose the diversity of cultures of the University and its uniqueness, as IIUM is a home for many international students and staff from different parts of the world. Another notable fact of the event this year: there was also a merge of Batik exhibition from various countries represented in IIUM such as those from Africa, Middle East and Asia.

Here's a snippet of Ummatic Week 2011's concept from the programme manager:

This event is organized by ISD (International Student Devision). Here is where various types of customs and cultures come together and perform their cultural performances from various countries, together with other events for all the seven days. This event aims at promoting brotherhood where race and culture barriers are broken and thus enabling the learning and appreciation of these various cultures exhibition by various countries across the world.

If you missed out on the whole event (which is extremely unfortunate of you!), here are some of what the event has offered during that whole week: cultural performances from various countries were held every night such as dances, fashion shows, martial arts, theatre performances and other creative acts; a food fair with awesome free local and foreign food; Sister's Night that was a blast (sisters only!) and of course, the grand Closing Night that united all IIUM citizens together to witness and celebrate the new bond of ummah formed throughout the week.

But the most outstanding event within Ummatic Week that made it truly stand out from any other events in or out of IIUM, was non other than the cultural booths held to promote more than 20 countries all over the world, from Thailand all the way to Djibouti! Held in the Cultural Activity Centre (CAC), visitors could explore booth to booth of different countries and experience the richness of culture that each country has to offer - from the vibrant colours of costumes and accessories to the fascinating facts of history told by the country's representatives. Lots of dancing by the brothers were involved as well to celebrate (while promoting!) their respective countries!

On IIUM.FM's part, our two DJs, brothers Hamza (left) and Adam have done outstanding interviews of various country's representatives, from China and all across to Egypt, every day throughout the week at 5pm. Great job, guys!

Other IIUM.FM crews were given tasks as well to collect songs from each country's booths to be included in IIUM's campus radio. So those reading this post, don't forget to submit at least 10 of your country's songs (max. 20!) to the Communications Radio Lab (from CELPAD roundabout, walk through the HS building and take the stairs down on your right, and the lab is right at the end corner underneath that stairs! PS: Look out for the male toilet.) Our crew would be more than happy to assist you!

All in all, IIUM.FM would like to extend much congratulations for the wonderful success of Ummatic Week 2011! We hope to see you listeners again next year on the same event!

Keep on listening to IIUM.FM, you campus radio =)
